95.9% of pages contain at least one -img- element while 99.9% of pages generated at least one request to an image resource in 2021. Today hypertext has become hypermedia. Most of the time we are worried about blocking the main thread via JS, busy choosing between hydration and partial hydration while we overlook the asset that is literally everywhere. In this talk we’ll uncover how images on the web can -and should- be optimised for the best experience. We’ll look at optimisation techniques, image formats, their pros and cons as well as various ways to load images in a modern web app setting. Once done, we’ll leap forward to the future and discuss the same options for video on the web
